What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer?: Don’t Make The Same Mistake

I just had, by mistake, a plug-in called Intelligent Explorer attach to my browser.

What a nightmare! I have another article on this topic, but this brings home a point. Spyware or adware items are continually infecting computers. Most computers have no protection from them. Most frightening is the frequency of them.

What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer? What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer?: You May be Affected

From the InfosecWriters web site, “According to a 2004 survey by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 91% of users questioned were familiar with the term spyware.

Only 53% believed their computers were infected, but a scan found that 80% of their PCs had some type of spyware installed on them.” It goes on to say, “…The average number of spyware components per computer was 93 with one computer having well over a thousand.”

What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer?: What is Spyware?

Butte College offers this definition:

“The term ‘spyware’ is broadly defined as any program that gets into your computer without permission and hides in the background while it makes unwanted changes to your user experience.

Spyware is generally not designed to damage your computer. The damage it does is more a by-product of its main mission, which is to serve you targeted advertisements or make your browser display certain sites or search results.

At present, most spyware targets only the Windows operating system (Internet Explorer).”

To be fair, spyware can be harmless, for example tracking cookies don’t do much. While such things infringe on your privacy, they don’t really harm anything. Others, however, are extremely dangerous.

Security System SignsWhat Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer?: So what do you do about it?

No spyware program seems to do everything, but there are a lot of goods solutions out there that can help. Here is a list of some of the top Spyware tools to look at:

1) Try Ad-Aware 6.0 Professional from LavaSoft (there is also a free version with less functionality)

2) Spybot Search & Destroy from PepiMK Software

3) Xoftspy form Pareto Logic

5) Spyware Guard from Javacool Software is a free program

4) Pest Patrol (now part of Computer Associates by acquisition)

5) McAfee Anti-Spyware

One thing is for certain: you do need to take spyware seriously. For some reason, too many people out there think anti-virus solutions are the end-all solution. They are not.

What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer? What Spyware Items Are Infecting Your Computer?: And, when all else fails?

Finally, as drastic as it seems, if your computer has been infected with a large number of spyware programs, the only solution you may have is backing up your data, and performing a complete reinstall of the operating system.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business

How Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Can Help Protect You

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business : Don’t Expose Your Business To Security Risk

Security is one of the most important things in life in the world of today.

Not only do we seek to protect our families but also (as business owners) our employees from unnecessary disruptions in daily lives and exposures to risk.

For this reason it is important that we eliminate potential security risks in order to protect all whom we hold near and dear.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or BusinessHow You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Obtain A Proper Security System

A proper security system for our homes and businesses is often a good start.

There are many reasons why this is important and several reasons in which this could work for the overall good of the family and the working environment.

First of all, in a family situation there need to be individual alarm codes that are changed on a regular basis (preferably whenever a teen changes boy/girlfriends or has a falling out with best friends in order to insure maximum safety).

In a business setting key-cards work well in order to insure that each employee has an identifying and unique code.

Many instances of misconduct, theft, and property damage done to businesses each year is the result of disgruntled employees rather than outsiders.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or BusinessHow You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Minimize The Darkness

Another thing that homes and businesses need to keep in mind is that a dark building or home is an invitation to those who would invade.

Darkness is the friend of those who would like to enter unseen and unnoticed.

Make a practice of leaving some sort of lights on in the interior of the home or business in order to allow passersby to see inside.

If this is a habit policeman driving by will be more likely to notice that it is out of the ordinary for the lights to be off as well as having lights on allows them to see inside for potential prowlers or misconduct.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Don’t Obstruct Your View

Do not allow shrubbery or small trees to obstruct the view of the windows from the road. This is where intruders prefer to make their entrances.

If nosey neighbors and prying eyes have a clear line of sight to these windows it is less likely that intruders will find them to be attractive points of entry.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have bushes or small trees near your home just keep them adequately trimmed so that they are not blocking the windows or other potential entry points to your home or business.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or BusinessHow You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: You Might Be Giving The Intruders Ammunition

Do not allow tools to be left lying around that offer intruders the means by which to invade your home or business.

Ladders and pry bars should never be left out in the open as they will imply invitation to those who may not have otherwise noticed your property as a potential target.

Most home invasions are matters of opportunity more than anything else.

Do not provide them with the perfect opportunity.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or BusinessHow You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Increase Your Lighting To Your Location

Lighting is another deterrent for potential intruders. Install plenty of lighting around the exterior of your home or business.

Motion sensor lighting is an excellent choice for this as it isn’t always on but will draw attention when it comes on.

Solar lighting just below the windows surrounding your home or business also provides some added degree of security without incurring additional electricity bills.

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Bells And Whistles Included

For businesses that have an open front door policy in order for clients to walk in, install chimes or doorbells that allow staff to be aware that people have either entered the building or left the building.

The chimes usually alert the staff and encourage eye contact as well as the ability to identify those who would attack and/or invade.

It also makes staff more aware of if or when those who entered have left (minimizing the risk of locking intruders in the building unaware).

How You Are Inviting Security Breeches to Your Home or Business: Final Thoughts

Little things make a big difference when it comes to security for your home or business.

Take some or all of the steps mentioned above and apply them to your home and business.

They will not only make your family, employees, and property safer but will in many cases help them feel more secure as well.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting

How Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Can Help Protect You

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Considering Protecting Your Home and Business

We all want to keep our homes and businesses safe and well protected. There are many ways in which this can be accomplished.

One, rather simple, method for assisting in this goal is often overlooked by the multitudes but is one of the most effective measures that can be taken in order to protect not only the property from intruders but also to protect those on the property from unnecessary injury due to an inability to see what is going on in the exterior after hours.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior LightingExtra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Less Lighting, More Attention From Unwanted Guest

Seriously, poor lighting can make a home or business a much more attractive target than the house next door which has adequate exterior lighting.

Home intruders may on occasion not be the sharpest tools in the shed but those who are successful in this line of work are only successful because they do understand the laws of opportunity.

A dark shady area that is concealed from the view of others presents a far more attractive target to would be intruders than a well-lit and revealing access point into a home.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: What’s In Your Plan?

When designing the security plan for your home and business you really need to try and think like a criminal. If you were going to break into your home or business where would you try to gain entry?

Those are the areas that need to be well lit and offer little in the way of concealment opportunities for those that would attempt to make an uninvited entrance.

Do not build storage sheds near windows and doors. Instead, keep them away from these areas. Storage units provide concealment and shadow in areas where this should not be desired.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior LightingExtra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Not All Security Is Simply From Invasion

You should also be concerned about the health and welfare of those who live and work in your home or business.

Having the area surrounding your home and business will not only reveal intruders but also obstacles, holes, and etc. that could pose risks of injury in addition to potential intruders.

You should also keep in mind that not all intruders have only possessions in mind when they make their grand entrance.

Making your home or business uninviting as a ‘pit stop’ for these criminal elements also makes it safer for your family, friends, coworkers, and employees.

You do not need to light up your home or business like a military installation in order to achieve the very security you seek.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Motion Lights

Motion sensor lights that only light up the area in which motion is detected can prove basic enough protection in many cases without inviting the neighbors to complain about the never-ending daylight you manage to create.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Rope Lights

Rope lights provide low level and decorative lights but they also invite passersby to take a look at your property.

This in itself makes your property unattractive to intruders if there is any kind of regular traffic in your neighborhood or an active number of neighbors that walk dogs, star gaze, or engage in any other nocturnal activities.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Decorative Lights

If rope lights aren’t appealing, many homes make judicious use of solar powered decorative lights, as part of their landscaping in addition to a hopeful deterrent to would be intruders.

Combining two or more of the forms of exterior lighting discussed above could net even greater results.

Extra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior LightingExtra Security for Homes and Businesses With Exterior Lighting: Prevention Is Key

Prevention is always the best course of action when it comes to things such as home or business security as well as the protection of those who live and work in your home or business from potential harm due to inadequate exterior lighting.

These are all things that should be considered when creating a security plan for your home or business. Lighting is important for many reasons.

Despite the fact that many people have top of the line security equipment and can’t find their way across their lawns after lights are out far too few people bother to take the need for adequate exterior lighting seriously.

Hopefully those who read this will have a new attitude when it comes to lighting up the night skies and keeping your home and business safe.

The Key Basics To Know About Padlocks: Did You Remember Not To Forget

We all remember the days of the padlock. When they were first available, they presented a great way to keep your belongings safe. They were common with lockers at school, with just about every locker having one.

Padlocks were easy to open as well; all you needed was the combination.

Once you had the combination, all it took was three clockwise turns, two counterclockwise, and once last clockwise turn to hit the final number and open the padlock.

The Key Basics To Know About PadlocksThe Key Basics To Know About Padlocks: Combination Locks Required Memory

Although the combination padlock was popular for it’s time, people soon began to realize what happened when they forgot the combination.

Combination padlocks were great for those who had a sharp memory although sooner or later forgetting the combination was bound to happen.

Once the combination had been lost, a pair of bolt cutters would be required in order to cut the lock.

The Key Basics To Know About Padlocks: Lock But Don’t Throw Away The Key

Shortly after the combination padlock came the padlocks of today – lock and key. Padlocks that required a key were much easier to use, requiring no combination.

All you had to do was keep the key with you at all times and you had no worries about the padlock. If you ended up losing the key however, you would need to cut the lock.

To prevent losing the key, most people chose to put the padlock key on their key ring or wear it on a necklace around their neck.

The Key Basics To Know About PadlocksThe Key Basics To Know About Padlocks: The Master Lock?

The most popular type of padlock today is Master Lock.

The Master Lock brand has been around for generations, proving to be the hardest type of lock to break. It’s been well proven and well documented that guns can’t harm Master Locks.

Even if you shoot the lock dead on with a shotgun or handgun, the lock won’t give. Master Locks are made of solid high grade steel and won’t give way to a few shots from a gun.

Although they may sustain damage from the blast, they will still be there once the shooting has stopped – protecting what you have them locked to.

Although Master Locks are the most popular and most common type of padlock, there are other types available as well. Multi-Lock, Medeco, and KW are all excellent examples of quality padlocks.

These locks feature unique and innovative designs that are near impossible for thieves to get rid of.

You can use them around the house to keep doors locked, safes locked, cabinets locked, and virtually anything else that contains your possessions.

The Key Basics To Know About Padlocks: Affordable And Easy To Find

The best thing about padlocks is the fact that they are very affordable. You can find them in virtually any department or hardware store.

You can shop online as well, and compare what each company lock will offer you.

The next time you need to lock up something and you need a small lock – you can count on one of the many padlocks to give you the protection and safety you need.

Who Has A Hidden Security Camera And Why: You May Have Noticed Them

Many different types of organizations rely on hidden cameras to bolster their security.

Hidden security cameras are appropriate for businesses with many employees and sensitive information or valuable items.

They are also appropriate for governmental organizations and families, among other groups.

Who Has A Hidden Security Camera And WhyWho Has A Hidden Security Camera And Why: Approach By Many Businesses

Many businesses opt for a combination of hidden cameras and visible cameras.

The visible ones serve as a deterrent to would be thieves while the hidden ones can monitor the more sophisticated thieves in the event the visible ones are disabled.

Banks, casinos and large businesses use a combination of the two types of security camera systems to achieve the maximum desired results.

Who Has A Hidden Security Camera And Why: Security Measure Nevertheless

When employees are stealing, the hidden camera system is the most successful at catching them in the act.

Clever thieves will note the angle and ability of the visible cameras especially ones that pan back and forth around a room full of people.

Cameras that do this leave blank spots in their field, several seconds perhaps where a particular area is not being photographed.

A clever thief will time his nefarious activities to coincide with those blank spots to avoid detection. But if he doesn’t know where the camera is that’s watching him, if he can’t time out a blank spot in the coverage, then he’s more likely to get caught committing his dirty deed.

That’s the purpose of the hidden camera.

Who Has A Hidden Security Camera And WhyWho Has A Hidden Security Camera And Why: Don’t Forget The Nanny Cam

The infamous “nanny-cam” has caught more than a few nasty nannies, who were ignoring the young children in their charge, or worse, abusing them.

The tapes made the rounds of various news programs on TV and a new industry was born.

Now there are wireless, battery operated cameras hidden in common household items like radios, and planters that an unsuspecting nanny would never find.

As technology improves and electronic items get smaller and better, hidden security cameras will become more readily available than they are today.

Now you have an idea of “Who Has A Hidden Security Camera And Why”. Be sure to check other posts on the site in regards to security.

Online Shopping Security Tips That You Can Live By: Be Careful When You Shop Online

Every year billions of dollars are spent by consumers on line; and as the trend is growing rapidly, shopping security is still the number one factor in which a person may choose not to buy from a website.

This is particularly true if you are new to the internet or starting to buy on-line for the first time.

Shopping security has always been a touchy subject and is so important that most reliable companies go to a great deal of trouble to protect their customers rights, privacy and security.

So can people feel safe when shopping on-line?

Online Shopping Security Tips That You Can Live By: 10 Tips To Remember

The answer to this is yes, if shoppers follow simple guidelines. If you are new to the Internet or a regular shopper online, the following guidelines should apply.

  1. Make sure you know the exchange rate; if you are not sure of the current rates, find out before you buy an item.

  2. Find out the cost of delivery before placing your order and how long the delivery will take. Most shopping sites use couriers to deliver the goods and when delivering overseas can become quite expensive.

  3. If you are bidding on E-bay check out the buyers and sellers feedback. This should become standard before you ever place a bid.

  4. Always read the FAQ section if you are new to the site.

  5. If someone demands cash for a payment, ‘say no‘. Use your credit card to make your payment; this will protect you against fraud. Credit card companies refund accounts where fraudulent activity transpires.

  6. Check the buyers contact page. Make sure their postal address is posted on it. If not, don’t deal with them.

  7. Don’t be afraid to ask the seller lots of questions, genuine sellers should be very helpful, some online shopping sites have forms where you can see customer feed back.

  8. Check, and read in full the terms and conditions, and the privacy policy of the site.

  9. If you are unsure about a site, try doing a search with Google or any of the other search engines.  You may find comments posted about the shopping site from other customers.

10.  If you are still not sure after reading the above it may be time to go shopping elsewhere.

These simple guidelines should also apply when bidding online.

If you do make the occasional bid in one of the many online auction sites, the same safety guidelines should become standard.

Part of the appeal of buying or bidding online is that you tap into the global markets at a click of your finger.

Buying through auction sites on the web can be very exciting and for most people enjoyable, but remember they can also be very addictive.

Online Shopping Security Tips That You Can Live By: Great Savings Requires Caution

Most of the well-known auction sites are based in the United States; so overseas bidders should follow proper, but simple guidelines when placing their bids.

We should not shy away from the worthwhile experience of online shopping.  Shopping on-line can bring you great savings, and will also take away the burden of going shopping.
